Objetivos

In this tenth block, the learner will consolidate the material from the previous Blocks and will start the crossover from an advanced level to a Proficient User level. In this block, the learner starts preparation to acquire the necessary level to pass satisfactorily the TOEFL.

The course content remains functional and focused entirely on improving learner independence in all areas, motivating the learner to become conversant on diverse subjects such as the family, work issues and making arrangements.

In terms of grammatical structures there will be continued revision and extension of the structures in all tenses with focus on the future tenses to talk about completed or predicted actions in the future. Productive and receptive skills are stretched with more phrasal verbs, idiomatic expressions, the differences between British and American vocabulary, making predictions and talking about future plans, offering, suggesting.

As with the other blocks on the course, there is frequent pronunciation practice and the learner has exposure to long and short sounds, word stress, vowel sounds, contractions as well as general vocabulary and sentence level practice. The use of a variety of exercises encompasses different learner styles as well as guaranteeing thorough coverage of the topics covered.

The block is comprised of a series of interactive exercises such as word-picture association, listening comprehension with short, realistic dialogs, sentence transformation, error detection and correction and student-led listening practice with the vocabulary items.

In this unit students learn to talk about personal situations and interests and to deal with non-verbal communication. Students revise and consolidate vocabulary about social networking, globalization and music. Regarding grammar, all verb tenses and perfects are reviewed, as well as pronouns, reflexive verbs and periphrasis.

Unit 2

In this unit students learn to express actions in the past (in progress or not) before a particular moment, as well as final past actions, and also to discuss dates and past habits. Students practice vocabulary regarding politics, relationships, friends and social events. They also practice perfect and continuous verb forms, periphrasis and the verb "used to".

Unit 3

In this unit students learn to express duration, incomplete actions in the past and the present result of past actions, as well as to discuss personal experiences. They consolidate and review vocabulary about locations and geographic denominations, and also about personal experiences and the theatre. Students must use adverbs and prepositions to express length of time, and also review definite articles, abbreviations and the present perfect simple and continuous.

Unit 4

In this unit students learn to make suggestions, promises, predictions and to offer to do something for others. They practice vocabulary regarding science and theatre, and work with synonyms and antonyms of words. Students must use future perfect or periphrastic to make predictions, and they must revise time expressions, phrasal verbs and sentence intonation for communicative purposes.

Unit 5

In this unit students learn to make general and specific descriptions, including people, and to discuss about similar relatives. Therefore, students must revise and consolidate vocabulary about the parts of the body, using adjectives to explain how people look alike, and also about education and memories of school days. Regarding grammar, the correct order of adjectives is practiced, as well as well as sentence intonation for communicative purposes.

Unit 8

In this unit students learn to negotiate in a business environment, get quotes, deal with offers and present relevant data in a formal context. They revise and consolidate vocabulary about business, insurance and contingencies, including useful idioms and the language for formal telephone calls and for contracting services.

Students perform reading comprehension and writing tasks with a series of exercises, while listening is practiced through texts and videos with interactive activities and real life dialogue dubbing. Thus, students carry out speaking tasks with the help of the voice-recognition system in different exercises, so they practice the pronunciation of the words and structures studied in these lessons.

The unit finishes with a test to revise all the grammar and terms studied through the course.

Contracting services for the company

In this lesson the student will watch a real life situation where a team of people at work decide their needs and negotiate appropriate deals to find the right price for the services they want.

The learner will watch them make offers and counter offers and use the existing relationships they have with suppliers to find the best deal.

The student will dub and record the talent of choice in the movie to practice intonation, stress and pronunciation. In this way the student will be involved in a real life situation that improves intonation and practices understanding.

Car and life insurance - Vocabulary practice

The course content introduces beginner vocabulary in the area of Insurance. There is pronunciation practice and the learner is exposed to verbal and written practice of the vocabulary. In this unit students learn to get and give professional advice, revising vocabulary about health issues and medicines and consolidating useful words and expressions for travelling. They must use perfect tenses appropriately and review grammar content of this level. Students perform reading comprehension tasks with a series of interactive exercises, including filling in the gaps, and they must also complete "Use of English" activities to review grammar and vocabulary. Listening is practiced through pronunciation activities, gap filling and real life dialogues. The student listens to a series of questions that he/she must freely answer and send the responses to the teacher. New vocabulary is introduced in this lesson; once the exercise is finished, the student practices with said vocabulary.

Cake design - Reading comprehension

In this lesson students read a written passage of text about the life of a famous cake decorator. The text is followed by questions in a sequential order that elicit students' skills on active reading. Readers are asked to peruse the passage for the general meaning, particular details and logical inferences. The suggested activities comprise multiple-choice, matching statements with their corresponding sections and choosing the best summary for the text. By practicing active and effective reading students acquire strong cognitive skills such as attention, auditory analysis, sound blending, sound segmenting, memory, processing speed and visualisation.

Secrets of the sacred lake - Use of English

Students learn vocabulary and useful phrases to talk about the secret of a sacred lake in Central America, the most popular pet and scuba diving. After reading a cloze text with gaps, students have to practice with it through a series of interactive exercises in which they find the lexicon in the specific context.
